Grocery shopping at Costco

The Best Supermarkets in Waikiki

If you are in the Honolulu/Waikiki area and are wondering where to find the best supermarkets to frequent, then you have come to the right place.

ABC Stores, Coco Cove, Duke’s Lane Market and Eatery, Costco, Food Pantry, Vintage Wine Cooler, Mitsuwa Marketplace, 236 Grocery, Waikiki Beach Market and Foodland are some of my favorite stores in Honolulu/Waikiki.

Every time I travel to a new destination I always research where to shop for groceries, as I like to cook and prepare some meals at home to help save money.

I love eating out, but I appreciate the days when I can just go to my kitchen and grab an apple if I need a snack instead of having to go out every time I get hungry.

I compiled the below list of supermarkets that I believe to be the best in the Waikiki/Honolulu area.

One thing to note is that some of these stores might not be within walking distance and a car rental, bus ride or an Uber/taxi might be needed.

1. ABC Stores

ABC stores are probably the most popular stores in Hawaii. Right before my first trip to Oahu, I read so much about ABC and when I got to Hawaii I was super impressed.

There are multiple locations within the Waikiki/Honolulu area and regardless of where you stay you won’t have a hard time finding one within walking distance.

ABC stores are locally owned and they offer pretty much everything you can think of. From food, beach chairs, coffee, clothes and even souvenirs﹘ABC Stores have it all.

You can use this ABC Stores locator to find the location that’s closest to you.

2. Coco Cove

Hours: 9:00AM-10:00PM Monday﹘Sunday

2284 Kalakaua Ave #101, Honolulu, HI 96815

Coco Cove is another one of my favorites in the Waikiki area and its very similar to ABC Stores. The main difference between this store and ABC is that Coco Cove offers more variety of fresh food options.

Their poke bowls are amazing and affordable, so be sure to try them.

3. Duke’s Lane Market and Eatery

Hours: 7:00AM -11:00PM Monday – Sunday: 2255 Kūhiō Ave, Honolulu, HI 96815

Duke’s is very similar to Coco Cove. I mainly stopped here for lunch or snacks on my beach days at Waikiki. They have so many food options and an amazing gourmet market.

4. Foodland Stores

6:00AM – 9:00PM Monday – Sunday

1450 Ala Moana Blvd, Honolulu, HI 96814

Foodland Stores are located all over the island, but the one I frequented the most was the Ala Moana location. You can find everything you might need for your trip at this amazing store.

They have some of the best fresh poke on the island, as well as bento bowls.

5. Food Pantry﹘Eaton Square

Hours: 6:00AM – 9:00PM Monday – Thursday and Sunday. 6:00AM – 10PM Friday and Saturday

438 Hobron Ln #110, Honolulu, HI 96815

This convenience store is located close to the Hilton Hawaiian Village and its very convenient if you are staying in the Waikiki area. They have everything you might need, including fresh fruits and vegetables.

6. Vintage Wine Cooler

Hours: 10:00AM – 7:00PM Monday – Friday

1249 Wilder Ave B1, Honolulu, HI 96822

Technically this isn’t a grocery store, but it deserves a spot on this list. This store has a great selection of wine that caters to all budgets.

7. Mitsuwa Marketplace

Hours: 11:00AM – 8:00PM Monday – Thursday, 10:00AM – 8:00PM Friday – Sunday

2330 Kalakaua Ave. #250 Honolulu, HI 96815

This store has a good selection of Japanese and Asian foods, drinks and snacks. It can be a little hard to find as its located on the second floor.

5. Waikiki Beach Market

410 Nāhua St, Honolulu, HI 96815

This is a great locally-owned store. It’s good for last minute items you might have forgotten to bring with you on your trip.

6. 236 Grocery

Hours: 7:00AM – 10:00PM Monday – Friday, 8:00AM – 10:00PM Saturday and Sunday

236 Liliʻuokalani Ave # 104, Honolulu, HI 96815

This store is another one of my favorites. It’s a perfect place to get your everyday needs. For all you coffee lovers out there, they also have freshly brewed coffee for a $1.00. Prices might vary depending on when you go.

8. Royal Mini Mart

Hours: 9:00AM – 12:00AM Monday – Sunday

161 Uluniu Ave, Honolulu, HI 96815

This store is good for those that are staying in the area. It’s smaller than the other stores listed in this article, but still good for normal everyday items.

Other Grocery Stores in Honolulu

1. Walmart

Hours 6:00AM – 11:00PM Monday – Sunday

700 Ke’eaumoku St, Honolulu, HI 96814

Walmart is always great for budget travelers and everyday needs as well. You can find anything you might need for your trip. They even have souvenirs for those of you in need of them.

2. Costco

Hours: Monday – Friday 10:00AM – 8:30PM, Saturday 9:30AM – 6:00PM, Sunday 10:00AM – 6:00PM

333A Keahole St, Honolulu, HI 96825

Costco is amazing and one of my favorite stores﹘even on the mainland. The prices here are the same as the mainland prices which is fantastic, as a vacation to Hawaii can be expensive.

I usually stop at Costco on my way to my Airbnb and shop for all groceries I might need for my entire stay. If I run out of items (which I always do) I frequent the other stores I mentioned in this post.

Costco also offers cheap ready-made food options like pizza and hotdogs, and they are very budget-friendly. I had a few lunches here and saved a lot of money instead of eating at expensive restaurants in Waikiki.

Tip for when you are grocery shopping at Costco

Get your gas here as well. Its more affordable compared to other gas stations on the island. I do the same thing while on the mainland.

3. Times Supermarket – McCully

Hours: 6:00AM – 11:00PM Monday – Sunday

1772 S King St, Honolulu, HI 96826

This store might be a little far from Waikiki, but if you are in the Punahou area be sure to check it out. They have some of the best produce on the island and the customer service is spectacular.

4. Whole Foods Market Honolulu

Hours: 7:00AM – 10:00PM Monday – Sunday

388 Kamakee St Ste 100, Honolulu, HI 96814

Whole foods is yet another favorite of mine. This store is very organized and very clean compared to some of the Whole Foods stores I have been to on the mainland.

The prices here might be a little more expensive, but its totally worth it in my opinion.

5. Safeway

Hours: Open 24 Hours

888 Kapahulu Ave, Honolulu, HI 96816

Safeway is great for your everyday needs. You can pretty much find everything you might need for your stay here.

To Wrap It Up…

As you can see, Waikiki/Honolulu have a lot of options to consider when looking for a supermarket/grocery store. You can find anything from gourmet Japanese supermarkets to everyday grocery stores within a short distance. Enjoy!
